I spend a great deal of my Summer guiding anglers and fishing myself in the dark chasing Big Brown Trout here in Northern Michigan and now my winter mousing time is almost here! Only a month out now and I will be starting my winter season in Arkansas on the White River. With the constant water temps (50 degrees) on this huge tail water river it sets up extremely well for mousing and streamers in the dark even if air temps get cool. During low water periods and bright sun so many Brown Trout go to feed in the darkness. Even better in the winter we get start by 7pm and not waiting to well after 10pm in the summer months for darkness. Here is past photo from Winter time mousing when water levels were very low for a prolong period.
Staying at the White River Trout Lodge is just ideal for night for my night fishing as we sit on awesome section of the river for night fishing and have boat ramp right next to lodge. Can have your room waiting for you when we pull out late night!
Dark periods of the moon phase are by far the best times to come for those looking to night fish. Bright moons can get covered up my cloud cover and that can really work well. But if planning for best time frame pick a week on either side of a new moon and you will get a good dark night. Jan new moon (dark moon) is the 11th and should have ideal conditions Jan 6-20th.
Here is my favorite pattern on the White River tied by Steve Yewchuck – love the glow mouse!
